Good Morning (or in this case, afternoon)!
While I realize that we have long since segued into winter with many people currently being surrounded by snow and ice, I have a fallish tablescape I'd like to share that didn't make it to the blog in all of the hectic rush that ensued last fall...
I am using some of the same elements from my Thanksgiving table (which I will probably share in March at this rate!), but am adding some new things, too...
Lately, I've been thinking of all the people I know who live alone or eat alone...
So if you do live alone, or even if you are alone for the evening or the week, I'm going to encourage you to treat yourself to a fun tablescape. I enjoyed this tablescape when I dined alone because I think a cheery table makes food taste better...
The tablescape started with a blue and brown toile cloth I found at Marhshall's (a cloth I had intended to use outside for dining on the balcony, but used here on a small corner table in the living room of our retreat). Next, I began to shop the house, adding our dark, bamboo-handled flatware because it reminds me of twigs...
The flatware echos the look of the tole twig candle holders that I have had for many years...
I added a woven brown charger to echo the browns in the cloth, along with a very simple pattern Nantucket by Wedgwood which adds texture due to the basketweave design of the pattern...
A little berry wreath rings the base of a small glass compote containing butternut squash soup...
I think these elements add up to a nice layered look...
Next, I added a white linen napkin along with a tiny gourd basket with an iron handle...
The basket will contain a little treat (a single Hershey's Kiss) since I am on a bit of a diet but still want to treat myself to something sweet...
Then I added added a cup in Nantucket (on which the handle conveniently broke off, rendering it useful in another way)...
I filled the cup with variegated mums snipped from a plant and blue Indian Hawthorne berries from the yard...
Finally, to add even more texture to the table...
I'm using a glass wrapped in a straw jacket...
And the end result is this...
A tablescape I enjoyed very much...
Now I know you are going to ask me how one might keep the berry wreath from being splattered...
With soup, even though this soup is thick...
And the answer would be...
Eat very...
Very...
Carefully...
Just like that...
But if you prefer, I won't tell a living soul...
Should you decide to lift the compote from the wreath and eat your soup that way...
Yes. It stays between us...
Just as it should...
Now, as the sun sinks lower in the sky...
Playing shadow games with our tablescape...
We light our candles...
And prepare to dine...
Pardon me as I do just that!

Dear Sheila-I have missed my visiting! With both boys engaged, my time is not my own! If we don't make things special for ourselves, who will? Besides, I don't know of anyone who deserves it more :) Love all the blue, brown, and textures. Squash bisque is one of my favorites--- Is it too thick for a long straw :)? Happy 2011 to you to! I love this table. That tablecloth just set it up to be up my alley because I love the color combination. Then, all the autumnal colors and warm rattan just went together perfectly.

First, I am SO glad you identified those berries because I would have been writing to you asking what they were. At first I thought they were blueberries, but I've never seen those in person, either, so I wasn't sure. (I don't get out much!) Gorgeous in every way!!! I LOVE that flatware!!! It has a rustic quality about it that is just amazing! Also, I think it was very sweet that you spoke to the people who may be alone for whatever reason tonight. My favorite china? That's a hard one to answer. My favorite depends on my mood and the season... since it's bitterly cold over here, I would say it's Christmas Rose by Spode for now. :)
His is beautifully put together. Love all your pretties you gathered upon that beautiful tablecloth. My favorite china - Gosh -- I think I love it all, but I'm especially fond of transferware -- just about any pattern put out by Johnson Brothers. Happy Happy 200th post and here's to 200 more!

I have the same flatware. I just got mine a month or two ago from Horchow. It's really versatile, and I love the look.
I also used to have those same glasses. I'd like to find some more. I love the straw wrap around them.
Well, my favorite pattern is Byron, by Spode but as you know I love just about all the transferware and then some.
Oh, I have to say I love the combinations in your floral arrangement....the mums are so pretty and the berries look fabulously delish!

I like vintage (as you know :) My favorite is called gold castle from occupied Japan but if it is flowery and vintage looking with gold accents, I will love it LOL!!

If I had to pick one china pattern, it would be Coalport Z3137, "Exotic Bird" with the apple green rim...so hard to find!...but there are many others that I adore...Bernardaud Limoges "Grace" rings my bell every time! Your tablescape is perfection in my eye. If God looked kindly on coveting, I would covet that tablecloth...oh my! You and I could easily work as a design team. Nice change to see an autumnal tablescape tonight! I rarely think of treating myself to a special place setting/dishes when I dine alone but you've made me think twice about that! I really like how you served the soup in that beautiful compote dish and the wreath around it is so over-the-top, I'd love to try doing something like that!

I adore all of the Versace for Rosenthal china, maybe the Barocco pattern, not that I could ever afford it, but I love all of it, especially the Christmas patterns, so intricate!

I would never think to spoil myself, I need to seriously repent! This is so lovely. I like the twig element and if you hadn't said it was from the fall, I would have thought the twigs look like the winter trees. That flatware is wonderful and so are the beautiful candleholders that you got for a steal. I love everything on top of that gorgeous tablecloth. Next time invite me and it can be a table for two.
Beautiful! You will be surprised at what I love best: first, that TABLECLOTH!!! And your berry wreath and your REAL berries from your yard! Wish I had beautiful berries in my yard like that. So pretty! Even for one! my aunt gave away all her everyday plates and glasses after she was widowed and used only her dressy things for the remainder of her life. we all have the same dishes - both my aunts, my mom, my sister, and me! so - we have one huge set between us the three of us left.
What a cheerful table! I loved the twig candleholders. I think that my favorite pattern is "my good china" by Lenox, Brookdale. Of course, it's been discontinued, but I still love it. I also love all Johnson Brothers patterns, esp. brown transferware!Once I had to have a cabinet put back on the wall because of all the wt. of the china!! I am your newest Follower!

It truly is a wonderful thing to treat yourself. Lovely table. You have such a gift.
Now onto an important topic. The wedding dress. It is my understanding that not only is a kiss not allowed, but shoulders must be covered while in the Church of England. This means NO STRAPLESS dress. Pip pip and cheerio. My old fashioned notion is that I bride should look demure~ not falling out all over. It is my hope that Kate's dress will be like Diana's and set a new tone for fashion. We will hopefully return to covered shoulders. :)
What a cheerful table Sheila. I often think of setting a pretty place for me to eat since hubby seems to prefer his recliner. I've started putting a towel around his neck and saying "pathetic" but he just laughs...doesn't get the irony, does he..lol...I love your setting.

My favorite dishes are Pink Willow - many makers but they all go together. I got a big platter for christmas this year - I have it sitting on the buffet with milkglass - spectacular!

Happy 200th post!I hate to admit this, but I'm actually, sort of (shhhhh, tell no one!), collecting a couple of china patterns at the moment - slowly because one is REALLY pricy - "Hunting Scenes" by Wedgwood and "The Old Curiosity Shop" (that I plan on surprising my husband with one day because it reminds me so much of scenes from the 18th century periodicals that he studies).
I love this place settings. It's fabulous. The table covering provides the perfect backdrop. Your twig candle holders are just wonderful.

Nows you know that I eat most of my meals alone and before I came to stay with my daughter, I always set my table, but never anything even close to this. It looks so wonderful and I love the bamboo flatwear, oh honey, I love it all!
Now I usually eat at my computer or on the couch, I miss my stuff!

Oh what a beautiful share. I love seeing this table all made up for one. It is gorgeous, and yes I too believe that if we give each table setting a little zip, we tend to take our time eating, enjoy the meal, and find a little happiness in our heart.

This is a very beautiful tablescape Sheila. I love all the natural elements you put into it as a decorative touch. I especially like your bamboo handled flatware and your candle holders.
You probably won't believe this but I don't own one good set of china! I have a service for 12 that I bought at EK Korvettes when I was first married called "Tea Rose" that is a "no name" china that was made in Japan. I also have a set of Christmas dishes - Nikko's "Happy Holidays" pattern which I love! The only other dishes I own are my every day dishes. I replace them as they get chipped or when I get tired of them. Living as I do in a small city house I just can't collect all the wonderful dishes and decorative items that so many bloggers seem to have as I don't have much storage room.
But I've always had a love for Aynsley china made in England in the "Pembroke" pattern. It is white with a gold rim and has a flower design with a little bird sitting on a branch. It is a reproduction of an 18th century design. I own a few vases and a sugar and creamer with that design and I always dreamed of slowing buying place settings until I have a complete set. But, as life progressed there were always other things that took priority over spending money of that. Maybe someday I will finally begin to buy them :)
Sorry I haven't been by. My husband installed a wireless printer which knocked off my wifi and we had the hardest time getting reconnected. It cut my computer time down so much as I had to use his wired table top model for awhile.

Absolutely love the Waverly cloth. The aqua blue and cocoa is so pretty. Our Marshall store doesn't ever get such great stuff. Love the Nantucket plates too. There are a lot of people who eat alone, so that was a very nice tribute to them. Swede

I like my china pattern - It's 'Amherst' and a Wedgewood. It is a simple pattern design of blue and gray with a silver lining on the rim. I chose it because my mom's bone china is plain with a silver rim and when I inherit it they will mix and match well.

I don't think I can wait to drive to Marshalls tomorrow morning! I just HAVE to have that tablecloth! A favorite pattern of mine is Kate Spade's Gardner Street Platinum Collection. I love the airy quality it has and well...what girl doesn't like a bit of platinum?
