Tablescape Thursday - Foodie Friday: Something Fishy Going On At An Ice Cream Social...

Today is Tablescape Thursday with our queen of tablescapes, Susan of Between Naps on The Porch, and I thought I would participate with a couple of little vignettes I put together specifically with children or the young of heart in mind. I also thought I would share the vignettes on Foodie Friday hosted by everyone's favorite foodie queen Gollum at her beautiful blog Designs by Gollum. Tablescape Thursday and Foodie Friday are always a lot of fun with so many talented people participating and two gracious hostesses presiding over the weekly events!

Then, as I was traveling about my blog rounds, I discovered there's going to be an Ice Cream Social on Saturday on a blog called Kitchen Bouquet. I thought the foodies among us would be interested in this. So check it out on Saturday to see what another lovely lady named Susan and her friends are dishing! But first I want to thank these three hostesses for taking time out of their busy lives and schedules to host these fun blog events for us! :-)

This particular tablescape idea all got started when I received a very special cookie jar from another lovely blogger, Melissa of Charmed Life. She has an adorable blog, so you want to be sure to visit her. It just so happens that I went calling there one fine Pink Saturday, and I signed up for her blog drawing, won first prize, and became the very fortunate recipient of this adorable cookie jar by Mary Engelbreit. Thanks so much, Melissa! As you can see, I'm really enjoying it...

And the bird on the top...

Enjoys hanging around with my Target birds...

And the cookies jar is cute from every angle...

What I like best about it, aside from its cuteness, is the fact that it holds cookies. And it just so happens, at this time of year I am always wanting cookies and ice cream. Now, I don't like just any old ice cream, but if it's chocolate, I will definitely give it a try. That's exactly what I did with this flavor from Starbucks that I found at Publix the other day...

Then I reached into the cookie jar and took out this cute blue whale...

I found Moby and his little friend (whom I'll introduce in a minute) at Barnes & Noble of all places. I had gone there to buy a copy of Gollum's book, Mad Girls in Love (which, BTW, I thoroughly enjoyed!), and of course, I was drawn to the food counter where I like to have something chocolate with my literature. But I walked away with the book and two cookies instead. Who knew that B&N would have cookies this cute? The shopper in me couldn't resist. Just look at that smiling little whale face...

I think these would be the perfect snacks for a favorite little friend or relative, so as a test, I set up my hobbit table, the one made of grapevine and moss...

This is a reveal on the table that I used for the Easter Bunny Tea that some of you thought was a tray only. It's a tray and table in one...

Then I invited Mr. Crab for cookies and ice cream...

He needed a booster seat for his chair...

So we have theme appropriate books doing the boosting...

I added some coral napkin rings I found at Pier One last summer to some green check napkins I've had for years...

Next came these coral colored starfish from one of my favorite interiors stores in Florida. I scattered them here...

And there...

And I added this ice cream fork in a Durgin pattern called Colefax. That is not tarnish on the tines and bowl; it's gilt ;-) ...

Over the years, I've looked for clearance plates at Marshall's, and I've had these particular ones a number of years. I used them for birthdays in St. Augustine, and they were about fifty cents each if that...

While they are made in Portugal, I don't know the pattern...

To me, the little squiggles look a bit like fireworks..

And the plates strike a festive note...

And these little bowls, also found on clearance years ago, are made by Citta and Campagana of the Villeroy and Boch group...

The pattern is called Novi...

I like the fact that the little black lines in the bowl look like stitching....

I think they go well with the squiggly Portuguese plates...

So, let's put those together...

Then we add ice cream and Moby...

[Note in Foodie Friday hindsight: If I were clever like the rest of you, I might have made little sea waves out of the ice cream, but is that doable???]

And you have an instant tablescape to entertain your little one...

Now, with a couple of additions and deletions, we can have another fun tablescape.

First we need to clean our plates...

Hey, it's tough work, but somebody's got to do it! ;-)

Now, use the same green check napkin and napkin ring...

Swap Moby for an octopus...

Swap the ice cream fork for a little bamboo spoon. These you can find online in the pricier catalogs, but I found mine at Beall's last summer for a super price! I think they were $16 for several five-piece place settings, but I just read on Christine's blog that she found some at Ross for about $10...

Next comes these blue plates I found on clearance at TJ Maxx for a couple of dollars. I like the shape...

Swap the coral porcelain shells for these silvery/pewteresque shells from Target...

I thought these silver shells looked pretty resting on the blue plate...

Or scattered around, either way...

Then, we dish some ice cream (same brand)...

Into this polka dot bowl I found on sale at Dockside Imports, and pop the cookie in the center...

And presto, another tablescape...

Well, for at least...

As long...

As it takes...

To eat...

A healthy portion...

Of ice cream...

And cookies...

By a card-carrying member...

Of the Clean Plate Club...

Say, "Goodbye," Mr. Crab!

And along with Mr. Crab, I am heading on over to visit Susan at her blog on Thursday by clicking here, and to Gollum's blog on Friday by clicking here. Then Saturday, don't forget to take out your spoon to taste all sorts of delicious ice cream at the other Susan's by going here.

Thanks SO much for visiting! It's always a pleasure to have you visit, and I so enjoy visiting you in return. Can't wait to see what you're doing today!

Warmly,

Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)... who is packing an extra five pounds from the ice cream and cookies Mr. Crab and I taste-tested for you! ;-)

First, every single thing was PERFECTION! The tablescapes, the attention to detail, and the story-telling, all so fabulous! I loved it!

Second, my most favorite ice cream is Starbuck's Mocha Frappuccino! And I was lucky enough to find these tiny little single-serve cups in the grocery store.
I eat one every day in the summer!
Great post, I really enjoyed it a lot! Thank you!

SHeila what a beautiful table setting. I love Mr. Crab sitting at the table. He looks so precious. The cookies looked great and I like the way that you ate the octopus slowly down into the bowl. Great idea, and the music wa perfect. My sister is Debbie, at There's An Angel On My Frontporch, she told me to stop by and say hi. I hope you will stop back by and read my Outdoor Wednesday, it was really a hit today. With the children that you have, I think it will touch your heart. Country Hugs, Sherry

Okay now this goes too far.
First I have to ogle and swoon over all the great dishes you guys in the US find for practically free in all those great stores that I don't have in Canada.

Then you get all the best stuff at the garage and estate sales but this, this is just too much to bear......MOCHA FRAPPUCINO ICE CREAM...I just won't stand for this any more. Please mail me some right away. Put on the box that it is a gift so I don't have to pay duty on it crossing the border.
Thank you.
Cute post by the way.

Eeeekkk how yummy fun was that! oohhhhhhhh I'm no little kid but me weeee little heart craves for such - and I mean everything in it LoL. Those cookies are just perfect and I'm in no way refusing an ice cream for that matter.

I can see mr. Crab is very much enjoying what you prepared - seeing the plate and bowl all cleaned. Poor little octopus drowning. Then again, drowning in melted ice cream may be a good thing LoL.

What lucky win! The cookie jar is adorable.
Briana walked in just as I was cackling like a simpleton over the drowning octopus in the chocolate. She shook her head and left the room. You are very smart, my friend, in combining chocolate with literature. For future B&N runs, keep in mind that the raspberry chocolate bars that are housed next to the register, can be eaten in one's car in a split second, lest they melt before the AC cools the vehicle's interior. Not that I would know this from experience.

I love this post and the "sinking" octopus photos, that is too funny!

Sheila, while I'm here I wanted to give you my family information and I believe you'll find one fact particularly interesting.

My ancestor, John Proctor was aboard the Sea Venture, the boat that shipwrecked in Bermuda in 1609 on it's way to Jamestown. Now my understanding is that he had already been in Jamestown and had returned to England to get supplies for the Jamestown settlers. They eventually built two smaller ships from the wreckage and continued on to Virginia. (John Rolfe, who went on to marry Pocahontas was also aboard the Sea Venture.)

John's wife Allis/Alice joined him in Jamestown later on and by all accounts they settled in a large house on the Pace estate, Paces Paines—I told you it would be interesting. So, our ancestors knew each other! Because of this I already knew the fascinating account of Richard Pace and his servant Chanco you left in my comments.

Briefly, during the 1622 Massacre, John was in England, getting more supplies and attending the funeral of a brother. Alice, who had earned the title of Gentlewoman, because she came to Jamestown with servants and ample supplies, was left to defend the family home. Here is what is written about her:

From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine Volume XV 1907 pg. 39

HEROINES OF VIRGINIA

5. Alice Proctor, who lived on Proctor's creek near Richmond, and who, in 1622, defended her plantation against savages with great bravery. She is referred to as "Mistress Proctor, a proper, civill, modest gentlewoman." She afterwards refused to obey the order of the council to abandon her house for a safer location at Jamestown, and would not retire till the officers threatened to burn it down.

The great-granddaughter of John and Alice married Edward Grantham II (my maiden name), he was the second generation of Granthams born in America. The Grantham's arrived sometime in the 1630s, early records show him Maryland at the Isle of Kent in 1637 and in Virginia in 1666.

Wouldn't our ancestors be amused to see their descendants have connected after 400 years!

Ah, you have the Target birds!! I bought them a few weeks ago to go with all my white dishes at the lake. Believe it or not, I have a VERY similar pair from a nice little shop that I paid 3X as much for. But I wanted to keep them here in Chgo. Enough about me.

This was such a creative and delightful post!! I bet you saw those cookies and the wheels started turning!! You are such an animated person!! (They would make perfect little gifts or make a present pretty tied on the ribbon).

I love the ice cream fork. Where on earth did you find those?? I didn't know they existed!! I have a special little oyster shaped spoon that I eat my berries and whipped cream with every night, but I didn't know there was such a thing as ice cream forks. I'm weird like that, I like a certain bowl or plate or cup for certain things...I think it has something to do with growing up in a large family and needing to have my OWN THINGS!!! The dishes are absolutely fun!! And the whole ice cream social had your signature characters and poetic style that I so love. So many dips and turns in the road, if you will!!

I'm so glad to see you do these 3 events because of your originality, they just take on a whole new twist. Fun, fun, fun!!

Now I am off to read the post before this. I thought I was caught up on my blogroll but I decided to just check out your blog while I sit up waiting for the youngin' to come home (out on a date with new boyfriend, shhhh)!!

xoxo
Jane
