Photo of a tall-dark-handsome Scottish (has to be Scottish!) stranger at your door for New Years!
Are there any New Year's Day traditions with food your family observes? Since I was small, we've always eaten ham and black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for prosperity. I'm pretty sure the black-eyed pea part started in the South, but I would love to do the research on the ham part of the equation.
And speaking of ham, we had the most delicious ham biscuits (though we actually used small rolls) at the party for my friend's daughter, and everyone kept asking for the recipe. I was cutting corners in terms of ease, so I will let you in on my little secret that worked and worked well. I started at my favorite store...

And if you haven't met Sister Schubert, you need to make friends with her!
Sister's rolls are some of the best, and you can find them in the freezer section of Publix (that's the grocery store) here in Florida. Look for them in your grocery case where you live, and if they don't have them, see if you can get the manager to order them. They are REALLY good, and all you have to do is put them out on the counter to thaw them and then pop them in the oven for a few minutes to have delicious goodness! They come in a tin so you can cook them in that or in foil, either way.
I actualy bought two hams to be sure we had enough. You can freeze the one you don't use for a later date. I bought a large ham, and we went through most of it. The ladies in the cookbook said to get a pound of ham, but I like to have a gracious plenty so I got a nice-sized ham of about nine pounds. We went through quite a bit (several pounds at least), but there was still plenty left for snacking...
After I came home armed with ham, rolls, and a ton of other stuff from Publix (I go crazy in there!), I took out this trusty cookbook of party recipes...
These ladies had another one I loved, and my dear MIL gave me this one when it came out with their latest recipes. And they are good! I wanted some sort of tasty spread to go on the rolls and ham, and I found it in here.
Their recipe actually calls for smoked ham (or turkey) and sweet potato biscuits, but my Honey-Baked ham (bone-in has the most flavor!) and Sister Schubert rolls worked just fine. Here's the recipe everyone was asking for, and it was so easy that Mr. Magpie made it!
Use half a cup of unsalted butter (softened... we softened it in the microwave)
4 scallions minced (we used a portion of a small container of chopped green onions that Publix had already cut up because who wants to smell like an onion before a party! ;-)
A half a cup of mango chutney (we used Cross and Blackwell's)
2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard (we used Grey Poupon brand)
You mix all of those ingredients together to make a spread, and then you spread it on the roll, put a ham slice on, heat, serve, and eat! They really are GOOD!
Note that we doubled the recipe, and this is all that was left of the spread [note also that it's hard to photograph food, and this is proof positive because it tastes better than it looks in this picture!]...
...which was just enough to spread on some rolls for us to enjoy! You might want to try it on leftover ham you have from New Year's if that's one of your traditions. AND you might want to try it with sweet potato biscuits if you are an adventurous cook.
One other recipe that some of the younger cooks were begging for is the simplest thing on EARTH and has been around for years! It's artichoke spread, and all you have to remember is one/one/one... one cup of mayonnaise/one cup of Parmesan cheese/one can of artichoke hearts, drained and mashed. Sometimes I add more artichokes. I play with that part, but one can of them will work just fine. I always double and sometimes triple this recipe for a party. Believe me, people eat it like hotcakes!
You simply mix all of those ingredients, sprinkle extra cheese on top, and bake at 350 degrees until it is good and bubbly. Serve with those triangular Trisquits or Carr's crackers or whatever you like. It is delicious! It's no-fail and always popular. There are variations on that theme, but those three ingredients will get you where you need to go -- straight to a hit dish!
Enjoy!
Oh, and Happy New Year! May 2009 bring you blessings abundant!
XO,
Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)

Good morning and Happy New Year Sheila. I just love ham biscuits and I discovered Sister Shubert's rolls this year and have become a big fan of hers! The artichoke spread sounds absolutely wonderful--thanks for sharing it!
Easy, quick recipes are always appreciated. Happy New Year!
Everything looks yummy! I got acquainted with Publix when I visited my son the first time. First he lived in Naples, now he lives in Fort Myers. I have probably told you that already. It has been awhile since I have been in one, but I think I can remember that it is one cool store. I do remember that it seems there is a Publix on every corner. That was my first impression when we visited Naples the first time in 2000.
Hi Sheila, Happy New Years Day!!!!! My black eyed peas were cooked with a ham bone I saved for the occasion. Mmmmmmm so good. We do not eat anything else that is supposed to be good luck, but a tall dark visitor would be fun. Also a donut sounds yummy. LOL.
Thank you for your comment about my new header. Are you ready for this??? That is the view from my deck. It was taken by my sister's love of her life, Bill Fox. I have seen rainbows across our mountain before but we were not here when this one happened. This is my sister who is my backyard neighbor. They have the same view we have because they live up the mountain behind me.
My sister just called and she is bring cole slaw for dinner today. I forgot to mention we are feeding 17 people today. All family. Cabbage is another good luck food for today. Yea, my bases are covered.
Love to you Sheila, my new very special blogging friend. I am so happy we met. Thank you for such sweet comments today.
Blessings and love...Jeanne
Sounds delish, Sheila.
I grew up, in Missouri, having black eyed peas, on New Years Day, for prosperity.

Lorrie, you are so welcome, and I loved the sunrise at your house! AMAZING photo!
Sally, I know what you mean! It works for me, too! ;-)
Linnea, isn't Publix THE best? I'm so glad you know what I'm talking about... it's the cleanest, nicest grocery ever! I am a huge fan! :-) Oh, and I have friends down in Ft. Myers! Nice place!
Jeanne, I just edited my post and added a handsome Scottish stranger just for you! :-) That photo is prize-winning! GORGEOUS! Seventeen people? Mercy! You brave soul! I'm pooped after Christmas so no entertaining for moi! ;-)
Pat, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you have black-eyed peas in Missouri, but I think of Missouri as a Southern cousin! ;-) I loved your geese photos! Incredibly beautiful as all of your photos are! :-)
Rue, BIG HUGS. I've missed you! I hope your special dinner went well. Had a low key evening out with friends, and we watched "Elf" which was cute as can be. I needed time-out after Christmas. :-) Loving you right back!
Alex, I'm sending much love your way, too!
Happy New Year to you wonderful ladies!
XO,

Sheila, thank you for the oh so handsome Scottish man, kilt and all. My father was Scottish/Irish with very black hair and very blue eyes. I'm partial, but he was so handsome. One day I will post him as a tribute.
Love you, Jeanne
Your food photos and descriptions has my mouth watering. The spread with the chutney sounds yummy.
My older daughter is a huge bread lover. I will direct her to Publix for those rolls. She broke up with her boyfriend last night, so comfort food will be needed, unless he plans on apologizing her and winning her back.
Happy New Year.
Hello, Sheila,
Thanks for your comments on my blog. I love taking photos around Vicksburg and hope others will begin enjoying them too.
I tried to figure out how to email you from my blog, but am still too new at this to figure it out. But I will. I would be glad for you to post my blog to your site. Yours is lovely.
By the way, Sister Shubert makes biscuits now, too. They are wonderful.

Hi Sheila
Oh my your ham looks so delicous. Oh my!! Good thing you have enough left for snacking on...and you had the black eyes peas hmmmmm I hope it brings you much prosperity. YOu could use that ham for some nice pea soup too.
Your recipes sound so good too. I like the spread you made and the artichoke dip..yum! Thats sounds like a great recipe. I do love artichoke dip and yours is pretty easy to remember so I'll have to try it.
It sounds like you have had a great holiday..*hugs*.
Allll the best for this new year...2009! I'm so glad we "met".
Have a lovely day..
Judi
Hi -- Sandy, Jeanne, Lisa, Marty, and Judi! Happy New Year to each of you! :-)
Sandy -- I have missed you on your blog. So glad you're back with us, and a very Happy New Year in return!
Jeanne -- LOL! I thought you'd like him, and something kind of told me you might have some Scottish blood. Of course, the Scotch-Irish were really Scots who were born in Ireland. I have a couple of those lines, too! Tall and brunette and handsome!
Lisa, you daughter will love the rolls! I'm so sorry about her breaking up with her boyfriend. As the song says, "Breaking up is hard to do," and I would imagine it's doubly hard on New Years. Hope she's okay!
Marty, if you see this, I came back and tried to set up my email. I assume it works. I can't tell because this is a new computer which isn't set up for me to click on it and check. I'm still learning, too! ;-)
Judi, you are so sweet! Just got back from a New Years Birhtday Party, and they had some delicious soup, black-eyed peas, ham, and pickled peaches! They also had some mighty delicious rolls! Wish I'd had a doggie bag. LOL! Glad you liked the recipes. That artichoke spread is the best! :-)
Happy New Year to all of you and much love...
XO,
Sheila :-)
You are so wonderful! I enjoyed a laugh with you this morning as you saw my surprise before I did!!! She is a talented funny daughter.
The recipes sound awesome and I love that they are easy. The dip has been a favorite around here... when others brings it and now I will make it myself!
Thank you for your wonderful comments as they lift my spirits each and every one of them!
Hope your dinner was a success and you truly enjoyed your day/dinner!
Blessings for a wonderful New Year!
Beth~♥

Hi, Rhonda and Joni!
Sorry I made y'all hungry. LOL!
Rhonda, be on the lookout for Annie. You just never know... ;-)
Joni, you and I would have gotten into some serious trouble had we known each other in our youth... and quite possibly as adults. ;-)
Happiest of New Years to you!
XO,
Sheila :-)
Pat! We must have been posting at the same time! All the same to you in return and then some!
Much love...
XO,
Sheila :-)
Hi Sheila..Are you saying a tall dark and handsome Scot in a kilt is headed toward my house? Let me peek out the door! Hmmmm...not here yet! In the meantime, I'll head over to my Publix and pick up some Sister Schubert's to go with what's left of my HoneyBaked ham. Hope you had a happy New Year. All my best for a wonderful 2009!...hugs...Debbie
I just love that Scottish man! Great art piece.
And now I can "officially" wish you a Happy New Year! The house party we went to was great...saw lots of friends we don't get to see nearly enough, and ate more great food than my rapidly-expanding waistline should have allowed. Actually, I don't think it did allow. My pants are a litte snug. :-)
xo, Laura
Hey, Laura! I'm so glad you had fun. That's great! Sounds like a really fun party, and it's always nice to see old friends you love. Wishing you the Happiest of New Years in return!
XO,
Sheila :-)
Blessings for you Ms QM on this delightful New Year!
What a joy you are :)
Thanks, Muse, and I return the compliment! :-)
XO,
Sheila
Oh....I *always* get Sister Schubert's rolls - we love them! We also had ham. So glad you had a fun New Year's! :)
I hope your New Years was equally fun, Ms. Tee, and I would figure you to be a Sister Schubert girl! :-) Someone said earlier in the thread that she makes bisquits, too!!!
xo,
Sheila :-)
My grandfather told me that he ate pork neckbone for New Years. It represented living high off the hog - so the neckbone is about as high off the hog as you can get.
