Outdoor Wednesday: Something New!

While this little corner of our St. Augustine garden isn't a new picture (at least not for me), this Wednesday activity (Outdoor Wednesday) is a new adventure for my friend Susan at A Southern Daydreamer. So, I put on my straw hat, which is also my thinking cap, and came up with this shot of the corner of the yard...

It's a shot of a fountain which is a boy with a seashell. It took four men to hoist this little guy in there as he's cast concrete and HEAVY! He's holding a giant seashell in his arms, and water is pouring out several points of the shell because he has obviously filled it too full! BUT to catch the overflow, the boy is standing in the base of another shell. So no water goes to waste. :-)

The winding path is stone and echoes the coquina stone that you often see used as building materials in St. Augustine. The tall Spanish Bayonets were grown in early St. Augustine gardens to keep out intruders. They have sharp points that stick pretty painfully if you get too close. The china berry tree is very old. Wild parrots like to sit in it from time to time. We used to have a colony of them living across the bay from us on Anastasia Island, but I don't see them as frequently of late. Might have something to do with the construction on the Bridge of Lions. I don't think they like the construction any more than we do, but we're excited that they're preserving the bridge and can't complain. Sorry, no pictures of the parrots, but here's a shot of our historic bridge before they began working on it...

Please join Susan and her friends at her blog, A Southern Daydreamer, for more Outdoor Wednesday adventures!

XO,

Sheila :-)

Morning, Ladies! I just lost my post. So let's start again...

Susan, thanks so much! Our lanscaper was responsible for the wind in the pathway which he did to take the path around the root of a tree. Thanks for hosting!

Theresa, it's a little on the coldish side this morning for us, but I'm not complaining. It didn't freeze!

Gloria, thanks! And hugs and smiles right back to you!

Joni, your fountain would be right at home in St. Augustine where people cultivate a sense of decay! ;-) We're probably the only city around that embraces mold!

Kat, thanks! Oops! I think I goofed because my friend Dot posted about her aunt with your name. I just assumed it was you. She's a sweetie, too, and I'm from Florida. :-)

April, it's a bit on the nippy side here today, but I'm not complaining! I'm actually a little further south today, but I checked the weather in St. Augustine.

Janie, thanks! And you do need to join us!

Dot, I think I goofed. I had a new friend named Kat who I assumed was your Aunt Kat. She's sweet and a wonderful Christian like you!
Be sure and stay warm. I don't like artic blasts either. We're chilly here today.

Sandy, sending warm thoughts your way!

Judy Bug, we didn't do the path ourselves because I'm two-left-thumbs when it comes to things like that. I left you a long message on your blog and hope you get it. :-)

Linda, I'm sorry you're so cold! We are chilly this morning (I'm a little further south today), but I'm not complaining because I like a bit of a nip. St. Augustine is a wonderful town because it is small but has many big city amenities. Lots and lots to do and see, good restaurants, proximity to an international airport and a smaller airport both, near the water, etc. Good quality of life. :-)

Sally, come see us! :-)

Linda, thanks so much! I appreciate the comments!

Carol, ditto to you! Thanks for dropping by!

And thank all of you for visiting. It always makes my day. See you at your blog if I haven't already visited!

XO,

Sheila

Love the fountain. Outdoor Wednesday is not happening here in Southern Indiana. It is way too cold. The only outside I will be doing is running to start my car. It looks so warm there, wish I was there.

You are very lucky to have such a beautiful garden & even luckier to live in St Augustine. We were there several years ago & the history of the city just warmed my soul.

Oh....I have just arrived here from the little (?) blizzard in ILLINOIS...on the National Weather Channel...the I-80 Corridor that they are talking about, the little dot on the map Joliet.....yep...me! I actually see !-80 from my house and the last time I peeked out...80 was crawling...SO I have decided to "stay" in your post...as the sunshine and beauty is just what I needed! Hope all is well!

Hi, Ladies! Hope everyone is warm and cozy on this chilly morning!

Bo, thanks so much! I am going to do a walking tour of St. Augustine one day, either next week or the week after. There's a lot of fun stuff around the "hood." ;-)

Judy Bug, you are most welcome! I love your sugar kettle, but I love everything about Louisiana! :-)

Lynda, I truly do! It's so nice to hear the sound of water from the porches. :-)

Rachael, I worry about you being cold! Stay bundled up! This is a very cold winter.

Ms. Hare, I wish you were here, too, and in St. Augustine, you could wear your wild getup and no one would notice because on a regular day there are folks in wild getups, including re-enactors.

Stacey, St. Augustine grass has its challenges, but I've always had it in our yards. They have some new strain of grass that they are promoting in Florida that resists dry weather. Not sure what it is, but they suggest it being planted in some areas with water restrictions.

Jenny, thanks much, and I love your water color you did! So neat!

Charoltte, thank you. It's tucked in that corner at the suggestion of the landscaper. I had a different idea in mind, but that's a hard area to do because we can't cut the tree... its protected. :-)

Darlene, thanks! You are a sweetie!

Cami, I have loved being here (this is a getaway for us). It is a wonderful, wonderful place. A very happy place!

Ellen, these locations are within easy walking distance of each other. That's the beauty of being downtown. :-)

Jane, you stay safe and warm! I worry about you. PLEASE keep in touch. Wish you were here to go for a walk, but we're supposed to have a cold snap, too! But the sun is shining, and the bouganvilla is blooming (I'm further south today). And I don't think we'll see snow. ;-)

XO,

Sheila

We are hovering around 3 above & got more snow last night. It will get worse as the day goes on. I worry about my dad but he's pretty wise!

Hi Sheila, I have been having the biggest problem getting my comments to post. I hope it is all fixed now. My dh did something to reboot or restart anyway it seems to be working. He was gone all day so no help until now. sigh. I finally did get a post up.

Your fountain is beautiful and the stone path is something I always admire. My pathways are mulch but it works here in the mountains.

I like this outdoor Weds. thingy. I love nature and gardens etc. Susan has a great idea with this event. Outdoors tonight is going to very cold. brrr.

Hugs to you...Jeanne

I love St. Augustine. You are so lucky to live there. Your backyard is awesome. I would have to go out there everyday!

The Quintessential Magpie said...

Good Afternoon, Ladies! I'm so glad you left your calling cards! ;-)

Beth, I'm glad you've enjoyed this event and my little nook in the backyard. I've enjoyed the even, too. It's so great to see all of these outdoor shots, but it's also fun to meet new bloggers! :-)

Janie, I've been thinking of you with the weather reports I'm hearing. Hope all goes well. Our house is about a block off the water so we get the bay breezes. We park the car and walk to everything downtown. :-)

Lisa, I hope you make it! That is a wonderful school. Years ago I interviewed an administrator for an article I wrote for "Flagler Magazine," (when I worked freelance for my friend who used to work for them and who just visited me yesterday), and I was so impressed with the facility. It's one of the oldest schools in the country for the D & B! I think you would be happy in St. Augustine because it is a sweet town with a sweet spirit.

Carol, it's a bit chilly in Florida today, but I went out in my shirtsleeves earlier and was fine. It's in the 60's I think, but it's supposed to go down into the 30's at some point. Not sure when. It's hard to believe it's snowing with the weather we've had. But we have temperate winters, even in the northern part of the state. Stay safe and warm!

Marsha, thanks so much for the sweet comments, and I enjoyed visiting your blog, too! I couldn't believe it the first time I saw parrots overhead, and the were bright green. :-)

Muse, I've spent a lot of time on the second story balcony overlooking that little corner, and all sorts of things have amused me... including an underwear model on the corner, posing at 6:00 AM. LOL! Actually, it shocked one of my guests, but the interlopers haven't returned... we all got a good laugh out of it, though! :-)

Wendy, I visited your blog, too, and enjoyed it! I loved what you did to your shelves. AND it's nice to meet another "Elizabeth."

Debbie, thanks so much! I love water, too. A garden is always more fun with a water feature. Tourists who walk by always stop and say, "Do you hear water?" LOL! I love it! It's tucked up in a corner of the back yard near a side street that is more pedestrian. :-)

Shelia, thanks so much! And I loved your blue tablescape. SO pretty! Love to Mother Precious! :-)

Terrie, if you ever go over that bridge again and end up downtown, stop by and say, "Hello!" :-)

Blue Moon, I so agree! Water is a very good thing! I always wanted a place near the water and in St. Augustine, and we've been blessed to have found both. :-)

Deb, thank you SO much. I appreciate the compliment.

Pat, I have missed you, but I hope your daughter is better! I wish I could send some warmth up your way. Sending love instead!

Ms. Tee, I tried to lie down and got back up! I took a long shower, and that helped. Every time I've gone to Europe and was sleep deprived, they said not to take a nap. To go to bed early and then sleep to catch up on the jet lag. So I'm going to try that tonight and see if it works! :-)

Jeanne, I think Blogger has had some issues today because Susan and I both tried posting on Lynda's site, and we couldn't! I tried about ten times or more. I'm going back later and try again. We are still warm enough here (a little nip), but it's going down either tonight or tomorrow. Can't remember when. Stay warm, friend! :-)

Kim, it's particularly nice at this time of year because it's so pleasant outside. I like a little nip in the air. We have an upstairs back balcony, and we like to sit there and enjoy the fountain... it's wonderful to hear the water. Thanks for dropping by...

Thanks to all of you for visiting. I loved reading your comments and visiting each of your blogs!

XO,

Sheila :-)

Good Evening -- Rhonda, Susan, Tam, Judi, Diane, David, and Lynne!

Thanks for your nice comments and for visiting my blog!

Rhonda, I'm glad you like the fountain! Thanks much.

Susan, many thanks! I wish you could be in St. Augustine, too!

Tam, thanks much. I wish I could send some warmth your way, but it's getting cold here tonight. We've got a tinge of that cold in Florida. I'm further south tonight, and we're feeling it here!

Judi, the parrots are so neat. And they used to always land in my tree. I haven't seen them in a while. Not sure why. Stay warm!

Diane, they've practically torn the bridge down to rebuild it. Can you believe it? St. Augustine has a very European feel. That's what all the Europeans tell us. So you're spot on in your comments!
Stay warm there! Fifteen sounds raw!

David, thank you so much! These are Fred's pictures, and I've always thought he has a great eye for composition. :-)

Lynne, I'm so glad you dropped by for a visit, and it is my pleasure to share with you.

Hope everyone has sweet dreams and a happy tomorrow!
