My dear FIL had a favorite expression when someone he knew would see something they loved, but would then be distressed if said item had some sort of blemish. Hearing the first note of a moan, he would smile and say, "Ah, it's the glory of the imperfect!" That statement is one of the most liberating expressions ever, and even though that sweetest of men is now a resident of Heaven, I still thank him for gently reminding me of it. So today, I have some "treasures" to share with you that are imperfect, but "Ah, it's the glory of the imperfect!" ;-)
Meet my little friend, Blakely, here who was actually a rescue, found in the trash of a rummage sale...
Just look at that face. It might only have one eye and part of a mouth...
But this little bear (who was named for the friend who actually discovered him with me) still has a lot of love left to give. Just because he's a bit worn doesn't negate that. When you look at the worn nap on his fur, you can tell he's been loved nearly to death. He was likely some child's best friend...
And because of that, he has a seat of honor under our Christmas tree each year! But wait, he has a good friend, this little blue-eyed, pig-tailed blond, who loves to hang out with him. She's a rescue from the same dumpster...
Her eyes and facial features have been carefully painted with ink, and she has legs and arms that go on forever...
Sally (that's her name because her face bears a striking resemblance to a friend of mine) is stuffed with straw so she has some age to her. I had a similar "rag doll" when I was little, but I'm not sure of this one's age. Her only crime? She had a tear in her leg and was a little worn, faded, and rough around the ages. Clearly a case of too much love...
They've been friends for many years now and happily coexist at the Magpie Nest. I thought of getting Blakely an eye patch, to give him sort of a swashbuckling appearance since we live in Florida where pirates once roamed the coasts, but I think he has enough character without the addition of one more thing...
Can't you just see them hopping onto this...
And riding off on an adventure across the country? Just please don't tell Annie as she'll commandeer the train, and who knows what will happen!
The caboose was a find from the Jr. League Thrift Sale many years ago, and I got it for the great price of $10. Looking back on it, that probably seemed like a hefty some for a thrift item, but it's a handmade birdhouse. Plus I have never seen another one like it. And the good news is... the money I spent went directly to charity! Now, that's my kind of treasure!
Thanks for visiting me today. I was slow getting started (it's going to be one of those weeks!), but I can't wait to visit all of the folks at A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words and see their treasures. And if you're not at treasure hunter, I still can't wait to visit you and see what's up in your corner of the world! You always make my day complete! :-)
Warmly,
Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)

Your comment about the train car reminds me of the childrens' book series "THE BOXCAR CHILDREN". I read many of those books to second graders that I taught - they would have loved your little doll and teddybear! PAM
Hi Sheila...
Let me begin by saying that YOU make our day, as well! You always leave such kind remarks and they are very appreciated!
I love Blakely and Sally. I think you're exactly right...they've been loved on a lot over the years. That's what makes them all the more special, right? That train birdhouse is a find...not bad for $10, even if you did buy it many years ago. It's just so unusual...two thumbs up from me!
Hope your Tuesday is TERRIFIC!!!♥
Sheila your well-loved little treasures are wonderful--I wonder who owned Blakely and Sally before. I bet they have some stories they could tell! Your train car birdhouse is a great find too. Have a very nice day my friend!
I love that quote of your FIL's. I had to write it down to remind me regularly. I added it to Quotes in my index box. Blakley and Sally look like great pals. Boy get Annie and Roy and my Helmi together and they may get into a lot of trouble. Don't you think?
You must have the kindest heart.THis is a wonderful story...Ann
You do have the kindest heart!
I enjoy all your sweet little beloved companions you have rescued. They look like they have surely been loved before... all most to death before finding a place in your heart. You bring them to life again!
Thanks for sharing the sweetest post.
♥♥♥
I sure hope you can get to Diane's blog. I went there this morning, but now, for some reason, I'm BLOCKED!
I want to give Blakely a wash, sew his mouth back on, and replace his eye. See, I can't leave well enough alone.
Sheila, You just brought back some great memories. When I was a little girl I had a teddy bear just like that. That might be a pretty old little bear.
Hugs, Terrie
Oh Sheila you did adopt a little furry friend!!
I love both true friends. They, like my "Kat", found the perfect home.
Love Claudie
xo
I love this post too. You'd think being a girl that I would fall in love w/ Sally but it was poor Blakely's well-loved, tattered, imperfect appearance that stole my heart.
Great finds!

I am so glad you gave Blakely and Sally a home...they really do look they they have been loved to pieces.
Your posts always make me smile. I am dealing with some "imperfections" of my own. Your post reminded me that like your stuffed friends, they make us who we are.
Blakely and Sally are so sweet and obviously worn with lots of love:-)
Love the birdhouse....now that is unique!!!
What a wonderful memory of your dear FIL...now, I'm going to remember him too with his nice expression..."Ah, the glory of the imperfect"...that'll cover a multitude of sins...LOL ;-) Bo
Hi Sheila!
I love that panda teddy bear! I had a similar one as a child so I would have rescued him too! I'm very glad to know he has a seat of honor under your Christmas tree every year along with the darling doll.
The caboose bird house is so unique! What a wonderful find.
Hugs, Pat
Love the little caboose! Such great pictures magpie - always a treat stopping over here!
Good Afternoon, Ladies! Hope everyone is feeling sassy today! :-)
Pam, I've never read that series, but I know I would enjoy it from the way it sounds! Thanks for the heads up on it and your sweet comments. :-)
April, thank you SO much. You are very kind, and the sentiments are returned. Thanks for the two thumbs up! :-)
Lorrie, I've wondered that same thing, and I'm so glad that Blake spotted them before they were GWTW. :-)
Linnea, I love that quote, too, and yes, they would be terrible if they were turned loose on the populace! LOL!
Ann, thank you so much. I hope I do. That's very sweet of you to say. :-)
Beth, I'm loving your own sweet self right back! Hugs! :-)
Sally, I'll hop over there and see! I'm afraid if I washed Blakely that he might disenegrate! I kind of think of his defects as war wounds. He probably belonged to a boy! ;-)
Terrie, I think that's the same thing that appealed to me, too, is that he looked like some of my toys from yesteryear. Most of mine didn't make it, but I do have Mr. Cluck left. Maybe that's why I love these so much... they needed to be rescued. :-)
Claudie, sending love to you and Kat right now! Glad you like my furry friend! :-)
Cami, it is the bear... there's just something about him that screams about how much he was loved and played with over time.
Sandy, thanks much! :-)
Penny, "too pieces" is the operative phrase here. LOL! ;-)
Lisa, I was thinking after I posted that I should have said that these critters aren't too far removed from us. You spoke what I thought! :-)
Rachael, thanks so much! Hugs!
Bo, isn't it great? It's so liberating! :-)
Pat, thanks so much! My friend Stanley had a bear he won at the fair that reminds me of this one, and he carted that bear and a sock monkey everywhere he went. I think that's why I felt compelled to rescue them. Actually, Blake did the rescue, and I did the adoption! :-)
XO,
Sheila :-)
Artie, you slipped in here before I saw you! Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
XO,
Sheila :-)
Hi Sheila, thank you so much for the very sweet comment on my post today. I guess I got a little carried away but not having a job under those very circumstances hits close to my family.
I really love those rescued toys Sheila. The little bear needed a home and so did the rag doll. If she is stuffed with straw she has some vintage value. I am sure Annie doesn't mind having some sweet friends. You have shown the caboose before and I didn't know it was a cute birdhouse. Adorable and purchased for a good cause.
I hope you have a wonderful day my friend.
Hugs...Jeanne
I thought your post today was a good one, Jeanne! I enjoyed it, and I pray for everyone who is out of a job. There are many. I just heard one of the saddest stories the other day about a large family in an exclusive neighborhood, living in a house without electricity or water and depending on the kindness of their neighbors to stay afloat. They had their power cut off, so my friend had an extension cord from her house to theirs and her water running from a hose so they coud have water to flush toilets and keep their fridge from spoiling. I pray that things will be resolved soon.
And I so appreciate your sweet award. You are a dear, Jeanne. :-)
XO,
Sheila :-)
Wonderful and insightful post, Sheila!
Kinda looks like my old teddy bear. But mine was completely threadbare. I kinda like the expression the missing bits give him.
That is some fine dumpster diving my friend! It's sad that thse look so well loved, and someone kicked them to the curb! (Or, the dumpster as it were!). My first ever teddy bear was quite worn like Blakely, but got lost in a flood in my parents' basement when I was in college. Wah WAH. The oddest thing....every once in a while I have a dream that teddy "appears" in. Odd, huh?!?
Good Afternoon -- Pat, Mojo, and Laura! So glad you came by to visit!
Pat, thank you! I hoped it would be! :-)
Mojo, I like him better that way, too. He's got "character" because he's been through life! :-)
Laura, I'm sorry about your bear. I think sometimes the things we love are so imbedded in our psyche that they pop up from time to time. That really doesn't surprise me because you are the king of person who loves deeply, and I know you loved that bear! :-)
Wishing you blue skies and smooth sailing...
XO,
Sheila :-)
I truly loved this post. Your generous heart is so evident in every word. You are a magpie, indeed! My son once rescued a little red and white stuffed dog from a dumpster...he called him Disappear....he said he had disappeared from some other little boys room, and we were going to have him cleaned and he could come live with us...he still has him...he's be rescuing things and people all his life...he's quite a man, is my son...
Hi, sweet Sheila! Look at you with all those stuffed animals. You must be a girl at heart with all of those around. Wish I could just pop down to FL to shop with you, it's just too far. Maybe one of these days we'll meet up. xoxo
Hi!
Love all your treasures!!! I always say what's one man's trash is anthers treasure. Thanks for stopping by my place. Have a great day!
Sherrie
Hi Sheila! I love your fil's quote - what a wonderful way of looking at things. :)Blakely is too cute, & so is Ms. Sally. Thanks for sharing your sweet treasures with everybody! ;)
Hi Shelia, The minute I saw the train car I thought of the Box Car Children too. Your little treasures are wonderful! Thank you for sharing.
Hi Sheila , your teddy bear is really old . I had one like that when I was a tot. And I am OLD ! LOL .
Yay! You are the fourth person to correctly guess what that house is. Hooray for you!
I love that quote...ah the glory of the imperfect! I will remember that and use it often! That should apply to me and my whole life. You know that is why we need a Saviour!
xxoo
What a tender heart you have dear Magpie.... and Blakely and Sally don't even sparkle but you must have seen the love that shines in their loved faces...... they are adorable....
HUgs
Linda
Hi...
your friend is cute and funny......
I love that quote of your friend.
Good Evening, Ladies! Thank you so much for your visits! :-)
Sandi, thanks for your very sweet comments. And I would love to see Disappear! Your son sounds like my kind of guy, and he sounds like he learned it at his mother's knee! Loved reading your blog. Thanks for the visit to mine! :-)
Rhoda, I'm holding you to that promise! :-)
Sherry, I couldn't agree more! That's why my nest is full to the brim. LOL! ;-)
Ms. Tee, you are so sweet, and I love that quote, too, and you would have loved the man himself... the quintessential gentleman! :-)
Carol, thanks much, and I really need to get that book and read it! Thanks! :-)
Theresa, you and Blakely the Panda are only as old as you think you are! LOL! I don't think you're old at all. :-)
Linnea, YEA! With your hints, my poor tired brain got it this time! LOL!
Kim, hello my mermaid friend! Honey, that makes two of us! LOL! And amen about needing the Savior! If you're home, I'm going to ring you! :-)
Linda, that is so sweet... thanks! I actually think my friend Blakely (Blake for short) is the one who has always encouraged me to look for the beauty or the extraordinary in the ordinary! :-)
Susan, thank you! I love that quote, too, and the gentleman who said it all the time. :-)
Thanks again, dear ones!
xo,
Sheila :-)
Oh Sheila...You are truly special to see thier beauty and come to their rescue! Yes, I agree!! It is a case of having been loved nearly to death. I am sure they are enjoying their second life with you! Hugs...Debbie
Thanks, Debbie, you're a sweetie!
XO,
Sheila :-)
Oh for the love of BLAKEY....I had a bear just like him when I was little...sigh...I wonder what ever happened to him...I recall his name was Furbear....., I know the last time I saw him was on a trip to Wisc. Dells...I have not thought of him in a LONG time! You and Blakey have surely brought up some wonderful memories for me...
Please Hug Blakey...and tell him it is from me.....
Oh, Blakely and Sally! Stuff like that just melts my heart (it's probably no surprise that Velveteen Rabbit is one of my favorite books!). I'm so glad they have a happy home at your place!
You have the GREATEST FINDS!
And the "glory of the imperfect". One of my new favorite quotes. :-)
Thanks, Susan and Jen, they'll be glad you know you like them! And Dad will smile knowing his quote is being enjoyed. :-)
XO,
Sheila :-)
