Outdoor Wednesday: Let's Go Stalking... Uh, I Mean Walking!

Today is Outdoor Wednesday at my friend Susan's blog, A Southern Daydreamer, and I thought we might shake off the cold, take a walk, and see what we might see in St. Augustine...

Many of you have seen this photograph before, but I can't help how much I love it. One morning, I had an early appointment, and as I rounded a corner, I saw this...

The sunrise was like fire on the water! I called Mr. Magpie and asked him to grab the camera and race down to the Bayfront to get the photograph, and he obliged. If you click on it, you can even see the light in the St. Augustine Lighthouse. This is paradise to me: sailboats, water, a lighthouse, and God's glorious sunrise combined!

Now, that we're awake, let's avoid the typical St. Augustine sights. Instead, let's go native and look for some of the things people on the tour trains might miss. Like the walk down Charlotte Street. I took you on that walk the other day...

But what we didn't do was window shop...

And this is a local favorite...

Since we're stalking instead of buying, we'll continue on our walk and peep into courtyards...

And check out ornamental cabbages and bright red fire plugs on Ancient City buildings...

And admire the sign for PASTA Gallery...

And their bright red door...

And when we turn the corner, there's something more...

A wonderful set of old pink doors that lead into a secret courtyard beyond...

Because it's a secret, we can't go in! But while we're here, let's take a look at the Purple Queen and fern growing from the masonry on the building.

St. Augustine plants love the climate and have a tendency to pop up in unexpected places...

No, we're not as tidy and neat as some of our neighbors up the street...

We're a little on the artsy side...

And we like to have fun and be just as colorful as our art...

I know, I cheated and went inside, but it was a tad bit chilly. Now that we've warmed up, let's continue down this lane where some of us have been before...

Toward the bay where we can wonder about even more secret gardens like this one which is getting a makeover. I know what's inside the garden gate, but since it's a secret, I'll never tell...

And secluded outdoor alcoves like this one...

And charming doors like this one...

On charming houses like this one...

Who have charming lights...

And charming pipes...

On charming walls...

Of charming stones...

With charming vines...

'Round charming gates...

And lest we be run down by the charming carriage (we've seen him before!)...

We'll hop on the back while he's not looking and hitch a ride part way to see one more house and garden (I happen to have on my camera) that's near the antiques district. This one reminds me of a storybook cottage. Excuse the sun as it glints off the original tin roof...

Made from coquina stone quarried locally on Anastasia Island, this house has always fascinated me. And it obviously is well loved by not only one...

But two furry residents...

What marvelous adventures do you imagine take place behind the whimsical window...

Or better yet, in the garden just beyond the trumpet vine...

I don't know, but the hour is getting late, so we'll stroll back past the fort...

Back into Old Towne, the original residential area of the Ancient City...

And settle in at our own little magpie hideaway-getaway...

Where we can hop on our laptop and visit all of you! If you'd like to see more participants of Outdoor Wednesday, pop on over to Susan's A Southern Daydreamer where all sorts of wonderful folks are waiting to share their special outdoor adventures with you.

Thanks for the visit! I enjoyed showing you around a small corner or two of one of my favorite cities!

Quintessentially,

Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)

I simply love going on these nice long walks wit you...they are so charming and enchanting! I love the photos of the doors to "secret gardens" (oh I would have to sneak a peek to look beyond the gates)!
And the wonderful little shops where the owners stop to say hello... I enjoy our little virtual walks (online)

Tell Mr Magpie thanks for capturing th photo of the sky on fire....that is amazing!

Happy Outdoor Wednesday my friend!

What a fantastic tour! It is quite cold here tonight, and this was better than a cup of tea. The sunrise photo is magnificent. I don't think you can beat Florida sunrises and sunsets, they are just incredible. What a beautiful town, think we might have to head further south the next time we visit the Sunshine State. Thanks for sharing this great trip! Kathy

Fantastic! I went to Saint Augustine as a child. I do have memories of it still after all these years. You live in a beautiful place. I must say I love the pink doors leading to someplace wonderful -- we can only imagine. And thanks for including the kitties. Cats enhance any and every post in my opinion. LOL

All the best, Lana

Oh Sheila...I found the gator kitty and the web site, too! I love the angel kitty teapot and the lemon teapot!I also enjoyed hearing the theme from "Little Women." I have watched that movie so many times that I can put it on and listen from the other room while I clean house and imagine every scene! lol I think I'll just stay here and wander around St. Augustine all night...have a little vacation! lol Thanks for thinking of me...hugs...Debbie

PS Remind me not to do every event ever created all in one week again. How do you do it???

Hi, Ladies -- Kim, Susan, Melissa, Debbie, Kathy, Jenny, Penny (Jenny Penny??? LOL!), Anne Marie, Jan, Maryrose, Lana, and Debbie! Thanks so much for your sweet comments.

Kim, I'm glad you enjoyed it! :-)

Susan, I was afraid everyone would get blisters from the length! Glad you didn't! LOL! :-)

Melissa, it was my pleasure!

Debbie, St. Augustine is a kitty town! Our next door neighbors have one who comes when they whistle and clap, calling Maxi! Yours would feel right at home.

Kathy, we're a little chilly right now, but I still love it in Florida. And you're right, sunrise on the Atlantic is awesome as are the sunsets on the Gulf. St. Augustine is a fun place to visit or to live. :-)

Jenny, I wish you could have seen it in person. I nearly had a wreck form being stunned by its beauty!

Penny, thanks! And I would have to agree that we do. :-)

Anne Marie, I'm glad to oblige! :-)

Jan, thanks so much! That little cottage just begs for you to come inside!

Maryrose, thanks for the compliment! It's a fun town, and I'm glad you enjoyed the armchair tour. It's a lot of fun in person. Very pedestrian friendly. :-)

Lana, I was so excited that they were ao lazy they posed for me! Talk about laid back kitties... those two posed for a total stranger. LOL!

Debbie, yea! I'm so glad you found the teapots. And I am wearing out. LOL! I have to work as a judge in a BBQ contest in Lakeland this weekend, so I will be MIA. Blogging is addictive. LOL! And I think a "bird" theme is theme appropriate for a magpie blog, don't you? ;-)

Hope everyone has a lovely evening and a great Wednesday! Thanks again for visiting. I've enjoyed your posts, too!

XO,

Sheila :-)

Thank you for the wonderful walk, Shella! The weather here is very wintery, with snow falling and icy winds blowing in from the Russian Steppe, walking along with you in southern climes was a welcome break.

My favorite is photo no. 3, the window with its reflections, promising treasures behind.

Congratulations on your Post of the Day Award you won yesterday over there in Australia, on David's Authorblog! Somehow I was not able to click through, but today I found your profil link and finally made it. What a wonderful journey you took me on, thank you!

This is my favorite kind of sightseeing lately...just sit back and scroll rather than stroll while being shown wonderful & charming places! Oh, how I'd love to peek behind those pink doors...
BTW, Sheila...you are the best!! for adding Lil Bear's button on your blog...Thank you sweet lady!

You know I JUST LOVE the Casa Monica. We did a Ladies Trip to St. Augustine when we lived in Georgia, and I'll never forget sitting in the bar at the Casa Monica listening to the beautiful piano music and drinking a chocolate martini.....heaven!

Also...that Mexican restaurant right near the water was so good...they made guacamole right at our table! I am wishing I had some of that and Florida sunshine right now:-)

You are a wonderful tour guide. Thank you for capturing so much charm and beauty to share.
Everything looks so enchanting.

Whenever I talk to people about places to live, someone always has something negative to say about their town or city. That is, except for Saint Augustine.

I think you have to stalk your way into the pink gated courtyard. :-)

This post is only making we want to get to St. Augustine even more! What a great tour. I think I could definitely help stimulate the economy in those stores!

And that sunrise photo...I could look at it every day.

Shore house hugs,

Hi Sheila,
Thank you for the trip back to St. Augustine. I was back the first weekend in Dec. 08 from 25 years ago. I hasn't lost its ambiance. I love that it is a walking city with the best Quilt shop ever.
We can't walk in WPB - Yikes
Thanks again,

Hi Sheila - that was an absolutely beautiful tour. I loved it! It makes me want to be in FL right now. And also, I heard the music you've got playing, & it sounded sooo familiar - then I saw it - The Thornbirds! Do you live in St. Augustine? From all the comments I would say yes. How beautiful. Some of your photo's did not load for me but I sure enjoyed the one's that did.
The sunrise was breathtaking. I will share our sunsets (I'm not a morning person) with all of you soon. We live on the river and it's a new one every night.

Sheila, your post is so 'charming' today. Big smile. I never get tired of St. Augustine. You certainly covered some ground I have not seen while visiting there. I adore all of the interesting doors. And the buildings too. Won't you miss it when you sell your place there?

Thank you for your welcome comment on my desk (secretary). I know it's a secretary but desk is shorter. LOL. I have the best intentions to write but since I am having a knee replacement on Monday, I will be on my back for a while. I will be walking right away but there is a leg machine to get my knee to bend and I must do it for hours a day and night. sigh.

I'll be glad when it is done and then both knees will be ready for high kicks to Mama Mia's Dancing Queen. Oh yeah, I can't wait for that to happen. NOT! No high kicks for this chick. Some good walking legs again though.

BTW, I would love to visit and watch you organize. ^_^

Love you...Jeanne

Good Afternoon, Everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving your calling cards! ;-)

Melissa, between Mr. Magpie and I, we sometimes manage to eek out some good pictures, but he's better at it than I on most days! Thanks for your sweet words.

Debbie, got it! Thanks! :-)

Meresi, thank you so much for your kind words, and I visited your blog and just loved it! How wonderful to live in Austria! It is truly lovely. I enjoyed your snow scenes equally. And David is so kind. I appreciate his encouragment and yours. :-)

April, glad I could help you warm up a bit! :-) And I love the way God paints, too. I also appreciate your award SO much. I will do something about it very soon! I am trying to work on something special! Thank you, friend. :-)

Janie, thank you SO much, and I hope that you will come see it some day! Your camera would definitely work well there! Your pics are so very lovely! :-)

Bo, so glad you enjoyed the tour, and it was my absolute pleasure to put that sweet baby on my sidebar. I hope he wins! I voted for him! :-)

Rachael, I love the Casa Monica, and I love to stroll there. It's a wonderful hotel! :-) We've had Christmas Eve in that room in the main dining room that has the tented ceiling and is the deep aburgine color. It was one of the best Christmas Eves I can remember because everyone was so relaxed, and the food was outstanding. I love it, too! :-)

Jane, LOL! I was half crazed when I typed that. I wish you were HERE! :-)

Lisa, it's all right here waiting for YOU! :-)

Laura, I'm afraid I would destroy the mystery if I stalked in there. LOL! It would probably be an alley with garbage cans or something. ;-) You need to "Come on Down!" Then you can stalk it! LOL!

Sue, thanks so much, and I'm wishing blessings right back to you! :-)

Linnea, what would that be? I can't wait to find out! :-)

Sally, it's a whirlwind! LOL! I'm tired just thinking of all that walking. :-)

Jan, you are so welcome, and I am interested in that quilt shop. If you see this, let me know where it is. Thanks! :-)

Chrissy, thanks so much, and I hope you have spring soon! :-)

Jemm, it's a very fun place to visit. It's very family friendly. It's also very pedestrian friendly. I love it best in the spring. It's lovely then.

Jen, I'm sending you warm happy thoughts all the way to Maine (which I dearly love)!

Judybug, in it's on smaller way, it reminds me a little of New Orleans. I think you would like it. :-)

Ms. Tee! I love that movie, too, and the score has that nice Irish lilt to it. Even though the movie was so passionate, the score was light and airy. Kind of an interesting contrast. :-)

Claudie, yes this is St. Augustine. We have a getaway there. It's been wonderful for us over the years, and we actually lived in the getaway for several years. It just got to be too much to commute every day for Mr. Magpie who is an attorney and is dependent on his hours for his income. LOL! It was like being on a permanent vacation. :-)

Kathleen, I'm not sure if you know this or not, but outside of Disney, St. Augustine is the number one favorite toursit destination of Floridians. I think it was the NY Times or the Washington Post who said that if a trip to Europe was out of the picture right now, then a trip to St. Augustine should be substituted. It's a nice town, very pedestrian friendly, and family friendly. Lots of good restaurants and things to do.

Mrs. Homemaker, I'm so glad you liked St. Augustine. I'm a big fan myself! Can you tell? LOL! :-)

Cam, I would like that, and thank you so much for the comments! Glad you joined us today. :-)

Mumzie, thank you so much, and I enjoyed visiting your blog, too! :-)

Jeanne, I hate that you have to have surgery! A close friend had both knees done, too. I know you will be glad when it's all over! Sending much love to you for a successful surgery. BIG HUGS!

Thank you all again so much for visiting! Loved visiting you as well...

XO,

Sheila :-)

Hi Sheila!

You've made me wish I could go to St Augustine ASAP! What a beautiful city! It really is charming, and I know I'd love peeking into all the galleries and boutiques. The photo of the sunrise took my breath away! Wow!

Did you ever hear the rhyme
"Red sky at night, sailors, delight; red sky at morn, sailors be warned"? I wonder if such a red sky at sunrise means that a storm is on it's way?

Thanks for the lovely tour ...I really enjoyed it!

Good Evening, Ladies! Thank you for your visit to see me here at the nest!

Elen, I love the expression "charm on steroids"! :-) That's priceless. Thanks so much!

Kathy, I'm delighted you could walk with me, too, and I'm even more delighted you enjoyed it! I enjoyed visiting you as well. :-)

Rhonda, I hope you'll join us some time! It would be so much fun to have you with us on Outdoor Wed! :-)

Charolotte, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour, and when I saw that sunrise, I literally couldn't believe my eyes. It became imperative at that point to try and save even a glimpse of it. It was majesty personified. :-)

Wendy, I'm so glad to have had you and your couch with us! :-)

Cindy, I hope you will indeed visit there one day. St. Augustine would love to meet YOU! :-)

K & K, it was my pleasure to take you with us today. Glad we could send some warmer weather your way! :-)

Patti, I'd love to visit Tennessee with you. Thanks so much for the high five, and I have added you to my list, too! :-)

Jewel, I enjoyed visiting you, too, and I appreciate the sweet comments. I love being a tour guide. I started giving tours as a youngster/volunteer in another town, so I guess something must have worn off on me! :-)

Kim, you are so sweet! And I am checking into it with the vet clinic manager to see what they use for dogs with sensitive skin. I'm also contacting Jody to find out what she is using on Shadow. We've got to help our friend Maggie. Hugs!

Pat, I'm so glad you enjoyed this. St. Augustine is a small town that lives large. I like the fact that it has something going on at most times and is very family friendly. It's been a nice getaway for us. And yes, Pat, I really do believe there is something to that. Sailors always went by the color of the sky, and it seems to be accurate. There was a good movie called "Red Sky at Morning." I saw it years ago! :-)

Kat, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and I enjoyed the nursing home visit. That's my love... the elderly. :-)

Daphine, thanks so much for going with! Enjoyed having you! :-)

Muse, LOL! It was a whirlwind for sure! :-)

Sweetest of dreams to all of you...

I truly enjoyed your piece of heaven. I peeked and took a stroll late last night but was called away and then again today and clicked on the magnificent sunrise to see the light in the lighthouse... It was perfection! Then I was back on the run... I am so glad Mr Magpie could capture it. Thanks for reposting it for all of us to also enjoy:)
I enjoyed each of the walks I got to take with you last night and today, and felt like you were reading me a delightful story as we went.
I Loved the rustic doors, the pretty greenery ( remember, ours is buried in fluffy white) and the history you shared.

I also wanted to thank you for your sweet comments on a difficult subject. I am so glad you are here. You are a precious blessing in our blogging neighborhood...
I felt huge prompting I had to write that post and then I almost put it in draft yesterday morning. Then again that same feeling came I needed to leave it to educate others about the FOCA bill. I try to follow those prompting, but sometimes it is a hard thing to do..
The borrowed text was being mistaken for my own...so I did tweak it during the day... our family does pray for our President and for all those running our country.
I am rambling, yet I wanted you to know how much I appreciated you coming back and commenting. I really value your friendship and opinions:)

Hugs and a big Thank You!
